very cool, guys.
How often are you just wandering around looking for friends to meet up with? I admire the tech behind this, but I'm not clear on what the average user would do with it. I can see the novelty wearing off quickly, as it just adds to the distractions in a day.
I think the last thing I need is people messaging me every 5 minutes because they happen to be nearby and want to know what I'm doing?
Did you notice the battery on the iPhone being used? :o) I can imagine all of this network and GPS activity killing power quite fast.
I want notifications of friends when they are around even when the app is not running on any phone.
That's what Loopt is able to do because Loopt has access to the operator's servers that can ask the network where people are.
What you are witnessing/participating in is the future of marketing. The technology being created to GPS your friends is a test market for advertising. In fact, it's already being used in a few large stores; primarily in China. When a customer enters a store, the signal is tracked and said customer will now receive an instant message from the store. Current sales, etc.
On a larger marketing platform, chains such as Starbucks will "buy" advertising in that when you are meandering down the street at 9:00am, you will receive a message such as, "For the next five minutes, recieve "offerofferoffer". The nearest Starbucks is _____". Pretty nifty, yes? Way to be on the edge of a revolution, BrightKite!
Remember in the 80's (for those of you who were born!) when we made fun of the "computer geeks" and said they didn't have a clue? Well, take another look! They be no dummies.
And did I notice that it sends you a text message whenever there's an update? So you wont always have to have the app open to see any updates?
international use??
It works worldwide.
Can't wait!
